In the old hay loft, under the highest beams in the house. Tall shuttered windows catch the evening light over the olive terraces, and the reading nook is where the hay chute used to be.
Named for the spring that feeds the pool, which runs somewhere beneath it. Soft morning light, a window seat over the walled garden, and a bathroom in warm travertine.
The old smoke kitchen, now a cosy double for grandparents or late-night readers. Thick walls keep it cool in August, and it is two steps from the coffee machine.
At the top of the tower stairs, with the widest view in the house: the cypress avenue, the pool and the whole Val d'Orcia going gold at seven in the evening.
Once the wine cellar, still the coolest room on the property. Vaulted stone, candle light and a deep bath — the suite people fight over in July.
In the old oil press. The stone mill basin still stands in the corner of the room, and the shutters open onto the olive grove and the hills beyond.
